WHAT A FROZEN BAG OF PUCKS WILL GET YA...
by Deb Beckers

Tucker-Osgood-Hockey-collision11.jpgDo trades really matter? I mean if your team sucks is adding a shinier new pylon at defense REALLY going to give you the magic you need to win the cup this year?

I don’t know... To me – it was pretty much a non event, no real surprises – but then again my home team (Toronto) really didn’t do anything. They should have gotten rid of Sundin or Tucker (whom they signed to a 12M contract - dumbasses). Their goaltender (Raycroft) is having a meltdown, letting in 4 of 11 shots in Tuesday’s game against Buffalo, maybe a new one? What they should have done is tried to get Bartuzzi or some other masher – the team’s just not the same without Domi.

Most teams used this as the opportunity to get rid of some dead weight and build for future drafts, which actually makes sense.

So what do you guys think?

How did your team fare? What did you like/not like about the deals?

Below is the complete list of trades (provided by NHL.com):

Yes, Deb is lazy this week. Deal – or better yet – discuss below =)

The Islanders made a great trade but at this point, it's kind of like polishing a turd.

hm.

not really sure about it yet.

it is an ok trade

still waking up

Boston's trade for Bochenski is interesting... I would like to see them make the playoffs, but I don't know. They seem to take one step forward, two steps back every week...

--------------

For once, the Flyers made some damned decent pickups without giving away the moon AND the stars. Picking up Biron from Buffalo was the best pickup in quite some time, and they also got what could turn out to be two good defensemen in two other deals.

The Caps and the Oilers..well, they both made me cry. And that's all I'm gonna say.

--------------

Ernie - I feel your pain, fekking leafs...

Lisa - Flyers got rid of MAJOR deadweight (see below) and have a great start for rebuilding. Too bad it has to be in Philly... (i kid!)

Michele - Heh, you said turd... Speaking of turds...

So turtle's Mighty Moose got May, not a bad player at all, second rate goalie for a consistant forward. Not a sucky trade.

The Angry Mustard Stains got Zubrus! Nice addition, shoring up an already strong line-up. I'm looking forward to seeing how they perform in the playoffs!

The Country Kitties got a prime player (or is that prima donna - I keep getting confused) in Forsberg. Is onyone surprised that he was traded? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Better feeling in the dressing room now i bet.

The Frantic Fishermen got Zednik (nice) and Bergeron (also nice) but it may well be, as michele says, too little too late. The thing that is amazing me about this team is that the manager everyone makes fun of (even when he was a player) pulled off the Smith deal with the Dirty Diggers. Canadians weep again, Edmontonians will surely miss his sweaty mullet - he should fit right in on the island (ba da bing).

I'm even going to touch on the negative movement done by Les Habs, The Oafs and my team that I shall now call Renfrew (Ontarians will get this).

Blarkety Blarkety Blark!

--------------

My thoughts. (If you don't like them, blame Johnny St. Claire)

After getting rid of Pronger and his contract, I don't know why they couldn't afford Ryan Smyth. I don't think the Islanders have drafted too well, but the Oilers got great value for a player who was going to leave at the end of the season.

St.Louie did a good job. First by signing those players and then fleecing Atlanta for Tkchuck.

Pittsburgh did ok. They lost the only guy they can count on for faceoffs. Roberts is already off the number one line. I've always liked Roberts, but at 40, I doubt he's fast enough to be able to play with Crosby or Malkin or Staal. It'll be worth it if he and his work ethic rubs off on Ryan Malone. Getting an extra defenseman is a good idea after getting rid of Welch.

Laraque could be ok. We'll have to see about that one. Before the Buffalo/Ottawa thing, I was really hoping for Chris Neil.

What would look really really nice is Ryan Smyth on Crosby's left wing. Really nice.

San Jose and St. Louie both made out on the Guerin deal. And finally, here's hoping that Philli screws up royal.

Though I doubt it. Looks like they did pretty well - especially for a player that is just going to resign with them next season.

... dirty, scummy, Forsberg.

Ernie, Deb, that Boston trade paid off last night. Ward made a stunning defensive play against some random Canadiens player, who absolutely would have scored, had Ward not thrown himself down and knocked the puck off of his stick before he could take the shot. It was a great, but simple, defensive move, and the B's seemed re-energized last night. I'm sure the Saturday night, sold-out, Original Six rivalry had something to do with it too.
