We Must. We Must. We Must Improve Our Bust. by Ernie Williams
This weekend is the annual NFL re-stocking program known as the NFL Draft. This, as if you don’t know this, is where all the teams get to pick new players for their team from the best that the college ranks have to offer. For weeks and months leading up to the NFL Draft, writers pundits and plain old fans make guesses, set up mock drafts and try to predict just who the heck is going to get chosen, when they’re going to get chosen and what team is going to do the choosing. The way the draft works is very simple. The teams that finished with the worst record pick first, the teams that finished with the best record pick last. Here is this years draft order:
Atlanta (from Houston) Houston (from Atlanta) New England (from Seattle)
While many football fans spend all kinds of time and energy analyzing the draft and trying to predict what is going to happen, I am not one of those fans. I don’t even try to make a guess about what’s going to happen on draft day because more times than not, those guesses are wrong. So called ‘football experts’ try to tell you this team needs this player or this team will pick a player for such and such a position. It’s all bullshit. Nobody knows what these teams are going to do except the people on the teams themselves and often times a spur of the moment phone call from some other team saying, ‘let me make you an offer you can’t refuse,’ can throw the best draft laid plans right out the window. I prefer to just sit back watch it happen and wait to see where the chips will fall. When it’s all over, I go and find out who my team has picked over the course of the two-day event. Usually they are players that I have never even heard of, since I don’t really follow College Football and The draft is an exciting time for Football starved fans. Even though there’s no games involved, it’s at least football related. For the fans of teams that had a bad year, it’s a time of optimism and hope, that with a high draft pick, their team is on the way to a better future. For If you’ve got any thoughts or ideas on who’s going to do what during the draft this year, I’d love to hear them, because I sure as hell don’t know what’s going to happen! |

I've had the same draft prediction every year since around 1973 and I've only been wrong 3 or 4 times, the Giant's first round draft pick will be selling cars within 3 years.
If they're not selling cars in 3 years, they should be (see Brown, Dave).
In the 30+ years I've been following the New York freaking Football Giants, they've had maybe 3 or 4 good first round draft picks in all that time. Taylor, Simms, Hampton and Ike Hilliard for those playing at home. And even Ike was just pretty good, not great.
The rest? Dave freaking Brown, Tyrone "I'm taking this play off" Wheatley and everybody's favorite, Dave freaking Brown.
Did I mention that Dave Brown was a first rounder? They gave up a first round in the regular draft for him in some "supplemental" draft.
And if you're going to mention Shockey, tell me what he's done except get commercial deals and drop the big passes.
Sorry, I'm still angry at the Islanders so I'm taking out on the Giants. Mostly because every single year I end up yelling at the TV, "You drafted who?"
Of course, the first time I yelled that seriously was when they drafter Simms.
