We covered the best covers, now we cover the worst of that lot.
You know the one, that great song that you've banged your head to, shaken your boogie to, tapped your toe to, or swayed your sway to ever since the first time you heard it. Maybe not the greatest song ever, or even your favorite, but a great song nonetheless. And then Hilary Duff recorded it and your head pounded and your ears ached and you threw up in your mouth a little, but you couldn't turn away, and a single tear slid down your face as you realized that there is a God, and he must be punishing us for something. Get your nominations in, it's The Worst Cover Song Ever!
Nominations stay open for 24 hours. Hurry, hurry hurry and get yours in!
Some suggestions to open up the bidding:
William Shatner: Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
Madonna: American Pie
Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes
Duran Duran - 911 is a Joke
And................you may want to close your eyes and ears for this one:
Celine Dion doing You Shook Me All Night Long
We started you off with some real winners. We know there are worse out there. Let's have them.
Mostly because when it was a hit? Our then teenage daughter played it over and over and over and over and over again. I didn't hear the Dolly Parton version until years later and thought, "That's kind of nice...why did Whitney have to slaughter it?
Dave Matthews - All Along the Watchtower - He should be subsequently violated with a bowl shredded fiberglass for this blasphemy...
Sheryl Crowe - Sweet Child of Mine
Dipsy Twits...errr...Dixie Chicks - Mississippi
Celene Dion - You Shook Me All Night Long - I'll shake her all night like a goddamn pitbull shakes a rabbit if I ever get my hands on her for covering ANY AC/DC song...
Anything by Rod Stewart. In fact, you could just give him his own category here. "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" is so dreadfully, ear-assaultingly bad... Urge to kill... rising...
Kim Carnes butchering "More Love" like a helpless little milk-fed calf. Ugh.
Also, Huey Lewis and whatserface, "Cruisin'." New rule - no remaking Smokey Robinson songs without first submitting a demo, a CV, and the results of recent drug tests. We insist, for the good of the nation.
Someone mentioned Britney's "Satisfaction", which sucked, but I think her worst was her cover of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts "I Love Rock 'n Roll", although it wasn't entirely her fault. They took all the rock and most of the roll out of a pretty catchy tune from my childhood and turned it into ... I don't even know what to call that trainwreck of an aural assault, it ain't music. My most hated though would be Lenny Kravitz and his massacre of The Guess Who's "American Woman". (I see I am not alone on this.) Same thing as Britney, disassembled a classic rock song but didn't bother putting it back together; but he reaps all the blame because he was the "musician" in charge. Lenny Kravitz, I point and laugh at you, hipster dufus. Oh, what Madonna did to Don McLean's "American Pie" was tragic. I can admit owning a Winger cd if that's what it takes to say what they did to Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze" was the worst idea since, well, giving Kip Winger a record contract. Kip, geez, that's a name for one of those purse-sized dogs, not a grown man.
This one is almost cruel, but since you have Shatner, I'm gonna nominate David Hasselhoff for Secret Agent Man.
It's almost closer to cringeworthy than funny as you realize he is absolutely serious about it.
"Dancing in the Streets" by Jagger and Bowie. The day that rock and roll died was the day that lame cover and its embarrassing video were released.
"South Amerrricaaaaah..."
Also, Nightfly, listen to some pre-1976 Rod Stewart, as well as some Faces albums, to see how good a cover artist Stewart could be. These days he's an embarrassment, but back then he had the sugar.
i remember feeling vaguely annoyed when that band face to face covered the Descendent's "bikeage." but the worst is probably Aerosmith's cover of the Run-DMC classic "walk this way."
Comments
"Baby I Love Your Way" - Big Mountain
"Behind Blue Eyes" - Limp Bizkit / I really need to hurt Fred Durst over this one. BAD.
"Love Song" - 311 / Proving five million frat boys CAN be wrong.
"Stone Cold Crazy" - Metallica
"A New England" - Kim Wilde / KILL THAT BITCH NOW!
so as not to leave a sour taste, here's one that KILLS but is very hard to find:
"Gimme Shelter" - Detroit (featuring Mitch Ryder). It rules and bitchslaps Mick for the little nancyboy he always has been.

Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
Mostly because when it was a hit? Our then teenage daughter played it over and over and over and over and over again. I didn't hear the Dolly Parton version until years later and thought, "That's kind of nice...why did Whitney have to slaughter it?

1) George Benson - White Rabbit
2) Eric Burden & War - Nights In White Satin Part 1
3) Eric Burden & War - Nights In White Satin Part 2
The War album also has a thirteen minute cover of Paint It Black that will make you say "damn, I want some of what he was smoking."

Yeah that butchery by Whitney Houston qualifies.
'Whiter Shade of Pale' Doro Peshe

Doh. Sorry...I meant to "second" Celene Dion...still doesn't change about how I feel...in fact...I'll reiterate if Turtle wants me to...

Live and Let Die - Guns N'Roses. Ick.
When You Wish Upon a Star - Gene Simmons. Ouch.
Also, another vote for American Woman by Lenny Kravitz. That song sucked the first time.

Michael Bolton should be on the list of nominees for every cover song he has ever done.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Paul Young. Horrid
Posted by: Nick | May 2, 2007 7:07 PM
The Celine Dion clip is going to give me nightmares. That was wrong, wrong, WRONG.
It gets my vote for sure.
And WHAT was that air guitar thing she was doing?
I fell ill. I need to lie down.

You cannot cover Joy Division.
That is all.
Posted by: Jimbo-sama | May 2, 2007 9:47 PM
Sweet Caroline - Frank Sinatra - absolutely brutal
Jump - Aztec Camera - do they hate Van Halen or their fans more?
Ice Cream Man - David Lee Roth - who would've thought he could ruin his own song?
You're welcome.
Posted by: IgwanaRob | May 2, 2007 10:02 PM
Dude. No way. That Aztec Camera version of Jump is one of my favorite covers EVER.
Posted by: michele | May 2, 2007 10:06 PM
Nobody said you can't like a horrible song ;)
