The Simpsons Movie -- Richard Wallace

So there I was minding my bidness when they started selling Simpsons DVD sets with a Simpsons Movie T-shirt included. I bought three, but got different seasons just for the sake of variety. I was probably going to buy them eventually anyway, and this way I got three enormous T-shirts I'll never wear. But having those things around the house pretty much clinched it for my Friday plans, left work at 1pm and got straight into the 1:15 at 1:22. I don't know what kind of filler they are playing before the movie these days, 'cause they were just wrapping up the pre-preview stuff when I walked in. I caught the winning short film featuring Diet Coke from some Diet Coke sponsored Diet Coke film competition. It was pretty lame, but so is Diet Coke, rim shot. Then some previews that I guarantee were so much more exciting than the films they were about you would probably have a better time watching a hundred of them than any of the flicks they were adverts for, although the Alvin & the Chipmunks thing will be on my rent from redbox list for March 08. (XMAS 07, CGI chipmunks, Jason Lee as Dave.) Okay, maybe not, but there was one really exciting Lord of the Wizard Pirate type thing that I might let someone talk me into seeing, although I have completely forgotten the name.

Back to the Simpsons Movie, here is your spoiler alert WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD TURN BACK NOW!!

First, it was not tremendously disappointing as I kind of was expecting but hoping against. Good story, fittingly more detailed animation for the big screen, yada blah. Spoiler1: Itchy runs for President, I will not say whether he wins. Spoiler2: If you see the cocoa scene and don't think of Marge and Nelson's lunch bonding scene you aren't a big enough Simpsons fan for this movie. The big Spoiler: In the ads for the film there is a scene where Schwarzenegger is President; not Ranier Wolfcastle, the irregular Simpsons character based on the real-life actor-turned-politician. That bugged me, and I was looking forward to finding out what happened to Wolfcastle, or if it was addressed - it was not. It seems only to be a concession to non-fans that would be wondering who this Wolfcastle character is that seems to be a send-up of teh Ahnold, or maybe just grabbing the easy joke of Schwarzenegger being President, or both. Points deducted for that, especially since the character is simply Wolfcastle with brown hair and a Schwarzenegger name plate in front of him. Double U Tee Eff.

Some of the sight gags could have used a little more dwelling, but that is understandable, it should make for more repeated viewings. Conversely, some of the other gags were pretty heavy-handed, again seemingly a nod to the less informed casual fan. For example, SPOILER there is a crawl ad for some stupid Fox show, which was a funny gag. Not so funny was adding in at the end the words "yes, we even put ads in our movies now." We got the joke, and I believe the first rule in comedy is if you have to explain it, it ain't funny. It was definitely less funny with that part in there. Okay, that was more about condescension regardless the depth of your Simpsons knowledge, but you see what I mean. This comes pretty early on, and it was at this point that I noticed some teenage girl was laughing at everything from the slight smile jokes to the few actual LOL-worthy jokes. Worst of all was that she had one of those laughs, a heh heh heh, Uh heh heh heh. Really deep-voiced too, like Bea Arthur and Kathleen Turner had a butch daughter together. Thankfully, I was able to ignore her for the most part. All in all, a pleasant afternoon, I even stayed for any possible Bueller moments, which there were two of, ending with SPOILER pimply-faced teen complaining about spending four years in film school to sweep theaters. Grade - B
More of Lisa's story (or Ned's or Bart's or anyone else's for that matter) would have gotten a B+ or an A-.

Oh SPOILER, there is brief, full-frontal male nudity, and it is probably the cleverest sight gag you'll see this year. Oh, also, I worked at Dunkin' Donuts and have eaten donuts and doughnuts for most of my life; they don't fill the ring ones, the nuts. They make yeast-raised shells (cut with a biscuit-cutter) for stuffing - that is a cake doughnut with no room for squooshing jelly into it. The yeast-raised rings don't get filling, it just doesn't work that way. (I'm talking about the picture above. BTW, donuts do not feature prominently in the film as one might assume.)

My buddy and I came back from that movie last night and after an hour or so of gaming we both had the feeling that we hadn't actually just sat through a movie. The last thing a movie should be is forgettable.

And the previews? Ugh. I'm sticking with Hollywood Video for the rest of the season.

More or less nothing seems important. I've just been letting everything happen without me recently. I can't be bothered with anything recently, but such is life. My life's been generally bland today. Not much on my mind these days, but eh.

I can't be bothered with anything recently. I've just been sitting around doing nothing. Today was a loss. I just don't have much to say. Nothing seems worth thinking about.

I haven't been up to much recently, but whatever. I just don't have much to say lately. Basically nothing happening to speak of. So it goes. My mind is like a complete blank. Such is life.
