The Gauntlet
gauntlet1.jpg

This is a column about everything and nothing. It's different every week, so there's really no explanation. It was named after the video game Gauntlet because, well, this explains it.
This is the thing about Gauntlet. It’s a cooperative game. You play with someone else and you depend on that person you are playing with to help you through the levels. Cooperation. Working together to meet common goals. Food, health, ways to escape. If the person you are playing with doesn’t have your back, you die. Simple as that. So you work together, looking at what your individual strengths are and figuring out how to best use each other’s skills to stay alive and move on to the next level. You don’t give up on each other. You don’t bail. Because you depend on each other.

That's life, you know?

Stuff about me: I live a sort of typical surburban lifestyle on Long Island with my two teenage kids. I work in the court system. I like action movies and bizarre cartoons and video games and music that makes your ears bleed.

And I have a Turtle. A Turtle who knows that the rules of Gauntlet are the rules of life.
He's a keeper. And he's the reason this site is here. Long story short: I used to have a weblog. I closed it down after five years. A while later, I met Turtle. He encouraged me to start writing again. I asked him to write with me. And a site was born. Not just a site, but something that kept us close while we were 3,000 miles apart. FTTW means an awful lot to us. It's part of our lives in a way I can't describe.

We're no longer 3,000 miles away from each other. We're about 3 blocks away. We now have a FTTW headquarters at my house and really nice life together. He moved across the country to be here with me and really, that's the greatest thing anyone has ever done for me. Life is good. Very good.

Those who knew me through the five years of my previous site all say the same thing to me; that simmering anger, the aggression and hardness are all gone from my writing. That's a good thing. That's the Turtle influence.

Have I mentioned on this site before that I'm in love with him? Because I am.

Damn straight.
