The Forest For The Trees by Shawna Black
Anyone who knows me or has read my past columns knows that I can take a picture of person fairly well.
But the landscapes - I hate the landscapes. Especially of trees. I hate trees in pictures.
So, today I'm switching it up a bit. Instead of me telling you the story behind this picture, I want you to tell me how it makes you feel.
Be open, be honest, be anonymous if it makes you feel better.

this is the stereotypical shot of what every person who wants to camp but never has thinks the morning looks like when you zip down the tent flap to greet a fresh autumn day.
i like it, and a good idea for a column, especially when photos can say so many different things to so many people. bravo!

This photo is outstanding. You have quite a gift, despite not liking the subject. Kudos on another great shot!

Carolyn - That's funny. Now I want to go camping! Or maybe I'll just buy the fire pit today for the backyard and pretend.
Jenn - Thanks for the comment. I love comments!
OK, I want more comments. Comment people! OK - please?

Reminds me of the Ralph Bashke version of Lord of the Rings. I sort of expect Aragorn, Frodo and the gang to pop out into the light at any minute.

Thanks Timmer - I think...

I like the framing. I am big into landscape photography ... rocks and textures mainly.
I think it's always a difficult choice in landscape whether or not to shoot for contrast or for detail. A "flatter" image may give you that detail, but not the "pop" that high contrast gives you.
In this image, I wish I had a bit more detail in the lights and darks. I wish I could make out some more of the detail on the shoreline and in the rockface in the middle of the picture.
OTOH, I love the water. Everything south of the shoreline is fantastic. The detail and the worn-out stump in the foreground are just too cool.

Now see, Cullen, that's what I'm talking about! You just described my delemma with landscapes!

I love the contrast on this and the surreal feeling of it. It gives me the feeling that I'm waiting for something to happen. Something...dark.

I did not mean to imply that it was a bad photo. Just personal opinion, I like detail.
("I" = Ansel Adams, "like" = David Muench, "detail" = Marc Muench.)
But, I will say, given what Michele said, it does kind of remind me of some of the high contrast stuff that Adams did in the Saguaro and Joshua Tree forests.

I'm with Michele - there is a compelling surreal quality to it. I think it's the juxtaposition of interesting but relatively mundane elements with dark, possibly dangerous ones. Nice job...

Relaxed and chilly.
That's what I get.
