TAFC# 12: Cover Songs
by FTTW Staff

Cover songs. You either love them or hate them. Individually, not collectively. I guess.

This poll is all about your favorite cover songs. Please, for the love of Spock, save your worst cover songs for next week's poll. I don't want to hear about William Shatner's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

richard_cheese.jpgWe want the good stuff. The songs where a band took a tune of someone else's and made it their own. Where they improved on the original or made it so different that you had to admire their creativity. Cover songs that make you sometimes forget the original tune even existed.

There are thousands of them out there. 90% of them are total crap. And we'll get to scrape that barrel next week. But for now, we want the cream of the crop, the stuff that rose to the top.

What's your favorite cover song(s)?

Nominations open for a few days. Poll will appear sometime during the week. We'll let ya know. For now, just keep nominating.

Here's a few of our own faves:

Turtle:

Hellacopters - Working for MCA (original, Skynyrd)

Michele:
QOTSA - Never Say Never (Romeo Void)

We know there's a whole bunch of great tunes out there (including dozens by Richard Cheese or Me First and the Gimme Gimmes), so nominate as many as you want. If we happen to have the music, we'll upload it for everyone's enjoyment. Damn THE MAN.

Have at it!

Update, by popular demand:

Easy - Faith No More

The Waifs-Crazy
Cowboy Junkies-Sweet Jane
Joe Satriani-Sleep Walk

Sorry-I couldn't do just one...Ok, if forced, I'd take Margo T. layin down Sweet Jane. Smokey man, real smokey.

--------------

Easy by Faith No More has my vote.
Do Ya Think I'm Sexy by The Revolting Cocks is another one that's at the top of the list.

--------------

Happiness is a Warm Gun - Breeders
Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughan

--------------

I'm going to third FNM's Easy.

--------------

'Ain't No Love (In the Heart of the City" Whitesnake

I generally loath covers but the Shaw/Blades cover albums that was recently released was not bad.

--------------

Still love "Down with the Sickness" -Richard Cheese
Easy- Faith no More

--------------

"Hurt" - Johnny Cash (NIN)

"All Along the Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)

"Get Down, Make Love" - nine inch nails (Queen)

Everything Zeppelin stole from Willie Dixon

--------------

"Gin and Juice" covered by The Gourds.

--------------

I'll fourth Easy. First time I heard the "Ewwwwwww" in that song I cracked up. Funniest part is the fact he sings it better than Lionel ever did.

--------------

Almost forgot, Red Hot Chili Peppers doing Higher Ground...simply for the bass line.

--------------

"All along the Watchtower"
Davwe Matthews Band.
(It is argued that this was a cover of Jimi Hendrixs' cover... some say it is a Bob Dylan cover, either way it is good!)

--------------

Here are mine:
Social Distortion - Ring of Fire
Hellacopters - Gimme Shelter, The Creeps
Dinosaur Jr. - Just Like Heaven
Metallica - Crash Course in Brain Sugery
Killdozer - Nasty Boyz
Sex Pistols - Johnny B. Goode / Road Runner (I don't know the words!)

--------------

Practically any remake of a Bob Dylan song.

"Ring of Fire" by Wall of Voodoo.

--------------

I second Johnny Cash's Hurt, and would also nominate Kermit's cover of Cash's cover.

I also second Satch's cover of Sleep Walk.

--------------

Social D - Ring of Fire
Supersuckers - Get It On
Johnny Cash - Thirteen

And I'll stick in Mike for good measure
FNM - Easy

--------------

Johnny Cash's version of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus."

Anything from the first few Rolling Stones albums, especially Chuck Berry's "Around and Around."

The Beatles' "Twist and Shout" (Isley Bros.) and "Boys" (Shirelles).

Manfred Mann's "The Mighty Quinn"

Thea Gilmore's versions of the Ramones' "Don't Come Close" and the Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love."

Annie Lennox on the Clash's "Train in Vain."

The Marcels' amazing 1961 doo-wop rendition of the 1934 composition "Blue Moon," by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.

Elvis Presley 1954 version Junior Parker's "Mystery Train."

--------------

I vote for FNM with Easy, too.

I also pick the Mad World cover by Gary Jules. And... Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Also, Proud Mary from Ike & Tina Turner.

--------------

I believe the list begins and ends with:

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)

--------------

easy for the fifth time

also higher ground cuz stevie knows that nobody's gonna bring me down.

shudder to think - crosstown traffic
black flag - louie louie
descendents - wendy

--------------

Here's a few personal favorites that come to mind:

Money, by John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band from Live Peace in Toronto

Mama You Been On My Mind by Rod Stewart (Never a Dull Moment)

Eight Days a Week by Procol Harum (Procol's Ninth)

The Girl Can't Help It by Mick Ronson (Play Don't Worry)

I've Been Waiting For You by David Bowie (Heathen)

A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall by Bryan Ferry (These Foolish Things)

Sweet Thing by the Waterboys (Fisherman's Blues)

If I keep on, I'll just get more and more obscure so I'll stop for now...

--------------

Oh, and one more:

Joe Henry- Let Me Have it All (Trampoline)

--------------

Aw, the hell with it, here's a link to what I wrote on this subject back in '03.

If I linkspam, I apologize, Michele!

--------------

Shit. Wrong link.

Here's the correct one.

--------------

links are encouraged, johnny :)

I have to second two of Claudia's nominations -

Supersuckers doing Turbonegro's Get it On and Cash doing an amazing job on Danzig's 13. I'll upload both of those later.

--------------

Can I nominate a cover album? No? Ahhh, I'm gonna anyway.
Bowie Pin Ups. Those are some great covers.

If my cover album is denied, how about Ted Nugent and Cat Scratch Fever? That's a darn good cover.

--------------

Oh! How could I forget The Reverend Horton Heat's cover of Folsom Prison Blues?

--------------

Oh yeah, Goldfinger does a hilarious cover of "Rio" by Duran Duran. Bonus for changing the final verse to "His name is Dio, Ronnie James Dio", and actually sounding like the midget guy.

--------------

Seetwist, I LOVE that cover.

His name is dio........ronnie james dio. Haha that cracks me up.

--------------

I don't know if 13 counts as a cover since Johnny did that one first. But I agree it is a great song!

--------------

I second:

Jimmy Hendrix - Along the Watchtower (Dylan)

Ike and Tina Turner - Proud Mary (CCR)

My picks:

Jeff Beck Group - I Ain't Superstitious (Willie Dixon)

Joe Cocker - With a Little Help from my Friends and She Came in Through the Bathroom Window (Beatles)

Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Jones)

Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics)

Van Halen - You Really Got Me (Kinks)

Run DMC - Walk This Way (Aerosmith)

George Thorogood & The Destroyers - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer (John Lee Hooker)

CCR - Midnight Special (Leadbelly)

--------------

where did you sleep last night - nirvana (leadbelly)
baker street - foo fighters (gerry rafferty)
little niki - foo fighters (prince)
heart shaped box - evanescence (nirvana)

jesus don't want me for a sunbeam - nirvana (vaselines)

--------------

dinosaur jr - just like heaven

--------------

and the Easy Star All Stars doing Dub Side of the Moon.

seriously.

--------------

I second Mad World by Gary Jules and Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Those are awesome. I also support Johnny Cash's versions of Hurt and Personal Jesus, and I'll go ahead and throw in Sam Hall. (Except, does it count as a cover? Apparently it's an old English folk song. I don't know.)

Finally, "Such Great Heights" by Iron & Wine. Love it. They took a good Postal Service song and made it amazing. I really think their version is superior.

--------------

Johnny: Oh, DEFINITELY. Their "Radiodread" album is just as good as the "Dub Side of the Moon". Horace Andy covering "Airbag" is pure genius. I can't think of anyone else who could put off Thom Yorke's vocal warble as well as Horace did.

I'd say that I like "Dub Side of the Moon" more than I like Pink Floyd.

Don't hate me. =)

--------------

I'm very impressed, not one tune by Hayseed Dixie.

--------------

"I Will Survive" originally by Gloria Gaynor (?), covered by Cake.

--------------

David Bowie - Sorrow - The McCoys

--------------

"What's My Name" - Manic Street Preachers
"Any Major Dude" - Joe Jackson
"Save It For Later" - Pete Townsend

Just for starters.

--------------

hey Seetwist...fucking finally. someone who doesn't laugh when i bring up the Dub Side. i'd say it's better than Floyd, but fuck that. i tried that once and got knifed around these parts.

i got the Radiodread and Airbag is prolly my fave, though i do like the take on Karma Police too. i'm really impressed with what those guys do [ i think the core is a two man team ] and the guests on both records is fuckin stellar.

they put on a good show...i think there is some crossover between the Easy Star and Dub is a Weapon.

--------------

Heh...Dub Side is badass...Brain Damage sounds really cool set to reggae...

Dread Zeppelin is interesting...not as good as Dub Side imho...

--------------

I second on Annie Lennox-Train in Vain (The Clash)
Also...
311-Love Song (The Cure)
Fishbone-Freddie's Dead (Curtis Mayfield)

--------------

I almost forgot

Travis-Hit Me Baby One More Time.

Light years better than the original.

--------------

"Tainted Love" - The Living End
"Big Yellow Taxi" - Pinhead Gunpowder
"Bitches Brew" - Nomeansno.

--------------

The Wallflowers - "Heroes"
